Virginia Motorcoach Association
Proudly Announces Estes – Counselman Scholarships

Virginia Motorcoach Association is offering two $1500 scholarships
for the 2012-2013 academic Year.

Those eligible to apply for scholarships are full-time employees or the dependent children of full-time employees of operator member companies. Also eligible is the Associate VMA contact or the dependent children of the contact for associate member companies. The eligible employee must have been employed for at least one year of January 1 in the year in which the scholarships are awarded. The winners or the parents of the winners must still be employed in the spring when the winners are selected.

Two scholarships, one for Member Operators and one for Member Associates, will be awarded each year in the amount of $1,500 each. The Operator scholarship is reserved for the employees and children of employees for study in a field related to the travel and tourism industry. The Associate scholarship is available to the Associate VMA contact, and their immediate family, for study in a field related to the travel and tourism industry. Scholarships recipients must enroll as full-time undergraduates in the fall of the year in which the scholarships are awarded. The scholarships will be applied to educational expenses at any accredited college, university or vocational / technical school in the United States or Canada. A student may transfer from one college to another and retain the award. There is a new competition for these awards each year. Scholarship winners can reapply a second year, but may not for a third year, as long as they are eligible. Winning a scholarship one year does not necessarily mean that the recipient will win in future years.

The selection of the winners will be based on a combination of academic merit, character, athletics, volunteerism, leadership, and work ethic. If an applicant is already enrolled in college, the college GPA will also be considered. An impartial selection committee of educators is responsible for ranking and choosing the winners.

Recipient’s responsibilities include enrolling as full-time undergraduates or graduates in the fall of the year in which the scholarships are awarded and continue in school for the entire academic year without interruption, barring illness, emergency, or military services. Scholarship recipients are responsible for making certain that their scholarship checks are delivered to the proper office at their college or university.

Checks will be mailed to each recipient’s home address and will be made payable to the college or university only. For students on the semester system checks will be issued in August and December. For students on the quarter system checks will be issued in August, November, and February.

Applications will be accepted between January 1st  and March 1st of each year. Applications are then reviewed by an independent educational selection committee to determine eligibility and awards.
